Discovery is being redesigned for a U.S. launch in 2004, likely for the '05 campaign. British sources say it's related to a new version of the Defender, the Jeep Wrangler-style Land Rover that departed the U.S. after 1997 for not being able to accommodate airbags. The new Defender may come here too, but it's not a done deal. In fact, parent Ford Motor Company's current recovery efforts could change the timing and nature of both vehicles. The redesign retains body-on-frame construction in line with Discovery's off-road reputation. But a smoother on-road ride is a priority, so solid axles give way to all-independent suspension; air springs are a likely option for top-trim models. Standard dual-range 4-wheel drive continues, but again include a locking center differential. Powertrains are a question mark, but we wouldn't be surprised to see a 4.2-liter V8, from sister division Jaguar, pulling a 5- or 6-speed automatic transmission. Size and styling change dramatically. A bi-level roofline and other Discovery cues continue, but the overall look is crisper and cleaner. A lower waistline and larger windows help, as does a spare tire stowed beneath the rear body rather than outside on the rear door. The rear door itself is gone too, replaced by a tall lift-up window above a separate tailgate that drops down or swings open. Like today's Discovery, the new one will offer seating for five or seven, but with more room for all thanks to larger dimensions. Wheelbase, for example, is said to stretch a whopping 13 inches to about 113.4, overall length nearly 5 inches to about 190. Overall height falls about 1.6 inches, which together with wider axle tracks should mean a more cornering feel. Further details aren't available, but expect the '05 to continue existing features such as anti-lean ACE suspension and off-road Hill Descent Control. The redesign was begun under BMW, Land Rover's former owner, so torso and head-protecting side airbags should be standard.
