Chris Crouch's
account of the trip

Got out of town around 11 AM Friday and learned that taking I-45 is definitely the longer route along with it is time to get the tires pulled off and re-balanced.  It was a nice quiet ride but evidently not as nice as Carlsons.  From Gilmer up to Barnwell I got behind a new 4 door Jeep Wrangler pulling a Casita and, although not in a hurry, was ready to get on by and set up camp.  Pulled up to the entrance house and Emma Lee called as she got out here wrangler.  Took a bit for the lady to get everything straight but headed on out to the trailer parking so Emma could get hooked up and set up.  She explained that her son was coming up Saturday morning and he was going to be hauling her new Suzuki Samurai Rock Crawler with her Disco.  I did not have a camera but it would have been a great picture when she pulled up to the pavilion in this Samurai that had 44's on it, at least. After Emma Lee and I drove into the trailer parking area I went ahead and
headed out to camp maybe to get my stuff set up.  That is a very quiet lonely place when there is no one out there and as I finished up I was thinking it was going to be a very dark quiet night if no one else came up Friday night.  Anyhow, I headed back to the front to hang with Emma Lee and check out her new Casita and new Jeep which were both very nice.  There was a big group of Jeepers who had started a camp fire and they had invited us over earlier so we headed over.  One of the ladies from the Jeep crew proceeded to give me each persons name and the history of each jeep and driver almost like the "movie like" slurring actor you might sit next to in an old run down bar if that gives you the picture.  They were a very nice group of people and soon it was time for the night run so Emma Lee and I decided to take my truck out, not aired down or center locked yet, to do some spectating of the rock crawlers in the dark.  Twister has changed a lot but almost all the jeeps and one chevy Z71 truck made it up through the rough part.  As example, Clay is fully locked know and we looked at Twister on Sunday and decided to just skip it. Back to the Friday night run, once again I am not aired down or locked and Emma Lee has a glass of wine riding with me to watch.  So we head down Clydes or Clives Ravine which is severely washed out but not to big of a deal, keep driving down through old camp which is where my memory kicks in from the last scarr so I tell Emma that the trail is not too bad and we should be fine but as we exit out of old camp we head up scorpion overlook of which is suppose to have a bypass so I still don't lock up or air down.  As we are sitting there watching the jeeps go vertical and then pop up over the top I think, well, I guess I can just winch out if I get hung up.  Ok, had it figured out until I saw the 5' wide by about 3' tall boulder at the top which was sitting next to a ledge on the right.  So I have to hit my left tire on the boulder with some momentum so I can get my right side up over the shelf.  Lets just say I made it to that point at which the traction control kicked in and slid me off the boulder to the left to the point that I was looking down the hill with my right front tire off the ground, not a comfortable situation for me or Emma's oh shit bar on the passenger side.  By this time the her wine glass was bouncing around on the floor and I was telling my spotter to just hook me up because I wasn't going to attempt his next plan of right hand down to try to get back up on the boulder.  After being pulled out and seeing that my transmission had spit fluid out of the vent tube from the work out I simply explained that with the center locked and the tires aired down it would have been cake.  So we headed back to camp not knowing exactly the cause of the fluid all over the rocks to check it out and head back to camp.  About that time Carlson and Clay drive by so I head out to meet them at Camp Maybe (apologize if I am mispelling).  Clay calls me on the cell to tell me that there is a large group of college kids at the camp and the fire is going.  I will have to leave that story to another but it was an interesting time around the camp fire and very entertaining and a good reminder of the college trips we use to take.   Finally hit the sleeping bag about 2 AM and the weather was perfect for camping.  Woke up the next morning to what must of been 100 crow flying over the camp and I think if Clay would have been outside might have tried out his new toy with laser site.  During Saturday we cleaned Desy way, On any Sunday, and Solihul and I was very surprised that we were the only Rovers on the mountain.  During the cleaning had some close calls with some trees except for the root that left matching dents and scratches on Carlsons and my Rovers, for me it seems to always be on the driver side.  During lunch we got to see Emma Lees new Samurai which is a beast but her comment when she drove up was, "get me out of this thing".  Before leaving from lunch to finish cleaning trails Emma explained that she was going up Greenlane and started smoking or steaming due to a coolant leak near the throttle body which Eric said he could probably fix to get it home but it was over by her trailer and we were heading back to our camp to meet back up with Carlson.  At that time Jeff showed up and had been looking for us for an hour which brings back memories of my first trip up to Barnwell.  So after a little relaxing at the camp we were ready to head out for some real trail running.  I think we started with Clydes ravine down headed towards Spider Ravine, at the entrance of Spider Ravine Jeff came on the CB to let us all know that his trilogy lights had come on.  We tried turning everything off and back on several times but no luck.  At this time it was getting dark and we decided to see how the disco would do without traction control, not a good idea.  After the first couple of bends and articulations it was evident that Jeffs truck was not going to make it up the climbs where the traction control is needed so Carlson backed his way through the trees and hills so we could hook up a tow strap.  During this time we did disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to see if it might reset itself but no luck again.  So the towing began along with the almost high lift and roof rack removal by a tree of Jeffs truck, I don't think his high lift will ever be mounted on the outside of his roof rack again but they made it and I followed.  So back to camp we went to drop off Jeffs Rover and head back out to get another run in before 10 PM.  So back out we hit Greenlane which was a pretty brutal ride at the end where you come back up to the main trail, there was one big root shelf you had to pop up over and then two more shelves to get up and over.  You had to hit all three with some decent momentum and probably needed to be wearing a helmet.  So after that we headed back to camp and honestly forgot about Emma Lee's coolant leak,  I think we were all worn out and forgot and I apologize for that Emma. Once back at camp there were a few people left from the college group, the quiet ones, and two of the Texas Rovers showed up for a one night camp out.  For one of them it was tough because he had forgotten the poles for his new coleman tent but managed to bungee it to several trees to have some shelter.  The next morning I woke up around 7 AM and started boiling water for my french press (idea from watching Doug and perfect for camping).  Saw that Jeff had gotten up and headed over to the fire when I soon found out that he had forgotten to pack his blankets, I just said he should have knocked because we all have extra stuff and it
got below 40 both nights and I am sure it was cold.  So Sunday had begun and we were ready to head out for a few more trails and then start back home.  Clay was determined to conquer Politician without any breakage and I think I heard him say that if he broke he was going to park it and ride back with one of us.  Well, Clay, Carlson, and myself with Jeff in my truck and Eric with Clay worked our way through Politician successfully with Clay being the only one to take the left side (rough side) at the end and he just crawled right up the hill and rocks.  We then headed over to do Binder Blvd. backwards to avoid the downhill portion where Eric just about turned "the red" over.  It was a very tight start around a tree down a hill, and to describe how tight, I took all the paint off of my Rovertym slider as it ran along the tree just past my folded mirror and only  with the close eye of Carlson working me around the tree.  Seems like I am missing a trail but our last trail had a good climb with a good size shelf we had to rise up over and turn hard left to miss the tree at the top.  During this my transmission burped fluid again so I decided, not knowing exactly where it was coming from, to call it a day.  We headed back to camp and got everything packed up, as we were getting ready to head out Scotty showed up.  Evidently he had promised his daughter in law that they would make the trip but had had some transmission problems that delayed the trip.  Scotty has a very good looking grandson, solid little guy.  So we all headed out, stopped in Henderson for some Chinese and then made the trip home.

Sorry it got long and probably gramatically incorrect but Sam asked. As far as pictures, Carlson should have quite a few good ones and I believe Jeff got some good pictures and video.
