Moab,
Utah/Bill Burke '04 Trip - Page

Wednesday, March 31th, 7:03PM
(6:03PM Utah time).
You guys are not going to believe the
pictures from today!
Stay tuned...
Thursday, April 1st, 1:36AM
(12:36AM Utah time).
Today (well, yesterday at this point)
started off a lot like Sunday--sick dog in the car.
What a mess, and lucky me, I got to clean it again.
Another bottle of Windex and another roll of paper
towels. Fortunately, the remainder of the day more
than made up for it.
I'm currently sitting on a bed in the
Big Horn Lodge. After not showering since Thursday
morning, I decided a bed and a shower would be nice
after three intense days of off-roading and site-seeing.
Thursday, April 1st, 8:23AM (7:23AM
Utah time).
OK, I tried to finish writing up the
events of yesterday last night (this morning), but
it didn't happen. Special Ed turned on the TV and we
watched Old School, and I immediately fell asleep.
So, let me try again...
The day started out intense (as far as
off-roading is concerned) and never let up:
We stopped for a minute to take a few pictures and then
we were off again (you'll see a pattern here, because
the entire day was like this--drive drive drive, rest,
drive drive drive):
So then Bill Burke gets on the CB and says we'll be making
a couple of water crossings. OK, sure. We've all crossed
water before. The part he forgot to tell us
was that this was a river, and we were going to drive
down it, and it was going to be deep, and, and, and...
You should have heard us after we got done with this. You'da
thought we were 16 and just... well... we were damned
giddy!
We continued on our journey and took some more pictures
of the scenery.
Like I mentioned before, a bunch of
pictures of Land Rovers doing what Land Rovers do
is cool and all, but like Elizabeth says, "They all
look like the same picture." (I guess you are now wondering
who Elizabeth is...)
But, it didn't take us long to get back at it again:
Then more scenery. Actually, everywhere we went was scenery.
Completely unbelievable.
We had several conversations
regarding these pictures. I mean, sure, they look
pretty and all, but seeing it in person is completely
unbelievable. We sure do wish all of you could
have been here with us:
And we're off again:
Lots more driving, lots more picture taking (Special Ed was busy!):
Now, at this point, it's winding down towards the end of the day.
We're all thinking of the night run we are going to
do tonight. We figure that it'll be a nice leisurely
stroll through the hills with our lights on, blah,
blah, blah (more on this later).
But, with the day winding down, we figure we are going to head into
town after passing through a place called Onion Creek.
Yea, right. No one was prepared for what we were about
to see:
We simply cannot believe what we drove through. Just unbelievable.
The icing on the cake!
Our plan is to now head into town. Ed needs cigarettes. Sherman needs
gas. I need a real bathroom. I'm sure the rest of the
folks had similar needs...
After spending what seemed
like forever out in front of the store with the open
wireless connection and uploading the 42 gazillion
pictures from the previous days, we all met at Eddie
McStiff's and had dinner.
The plan was to meet Bill
Burke back at the Big Horn Lodge and head out to
the camp site to get the folks set up who were going
to camp and do a little night-time leisurely off-roading. HOLY SHIT! We were not prepared.
This was no little leisurely drive. These were the most intense trails
we did (I later found out they were class 4 trails).
I wish it would have been light outside so we could
have captured what we were driving through a little
more clearly, but folks in the group speculated the
reason he took us there in the dark was because there
was no way in hell we would have done it had we been
able to see it in the day light.
Some of the pictures
are going to be blurry, but I think you can get
the idea:
After this hell, we all headed back to camp feeling a lot like what
I would assume war heroes feel like. We came, we saw,
we conquered. The damage to the trucks seemed minimal:
Josh smashed his rear bumper and Kai lost a trim piece.
We hung out at the camp site a bit and got the fire going for the
folks who were camping. Bill Burke thanked all of us
which we thought was insane as we spent the next 15
minutes thanking HIM!
Bill gave away two recovery gear bags: one to Angie for being such
a sport and driving a lot of the trails and one to
Special Ed for all of his running around and taking
pictures.
Bill Burke departed and that was that.
I'm not sure what the total of the tip we gave to Bill was, but I
think we would all agree, it wasn't enough. If money
were no object...
I'm going to speak for the group: Thanks again and again Bill, you
are the man!
We have no plan today, but I think it may be toned down a bit from
yesterday. Kai, Ken, and Sergio are heading out today.
Kai and Ken are heading home, and Sergio is heading
off to go snow-boarding. Steve and Mary are getting
the welds fixed on the Safari Gard front suspension.
After that they are heading to the Grand Canyon. Josh
and Angie are still at the camp site, and Special Ed
and I hear McDonalds breakfast calling us.
We'll keep you posted...
